Kiwi Adventures: Rotorua & Taupo

Friday 29 January 2016

Back again! I'm getting these posts up everytime I have wifi so are not in real time by any stretch!
So Rotorua was the first place that I hopped off the bus and  stayed longer than everyone else, it was sad to say goodbye to my first bus but now that I've had a few different buses familiar faces are cropping up all over the place.

We arrived in Rotorua in the evening and then went to a traditional Maori village to learn about their culture and have a massive dinner. It was surprising to find out how young their history is as they were counting in hundreds of years where as the Britain's history for example can be counted in thousands and thousands of years.
We learnt about their traditional tattoos and the way they used to make their clothes from plants as well as some of their games and dances. The Haka is so impressive live, think international rugby version time by at least five.

The next day we had a bit of a lie in and then got the local bus out to the original Zorbing centre. It was actually so much fun but felt like you were going to drown with all the water being chucked in your face constantly whilst you're rolling down a hill. The weather was amazing that day so we sun bathed a bit to dry off and then went back to the hostel for a chilled night.

On our last day Liv and I went to Wai-o-tapu the thermal wonderland which was so stunning! The water colours are due to the different minerals in the rocks but they are so vibrant and unreal.

The bus to Taupo was our second bus so it felt a bit like starting over again but we made friends so quickly and really loved it as well. We did a walk through a red wood forest and then as soon as we got to Taupo and we're checked in we had to get ready for our skydive!

Skydiving is literally insane! You feel like you're falling for like 2 seconds and the rest of the time I'd just such an incredible feeling! That night we went on a boat cruise/party at sun set on the lake and ate Pizza Hut.

Next day we did the Tongariro Crossing which meant getting up at 5, after not much sleep, and dragging our bodies a long way through some mountains. It was actually such a good hike, some incredible views and emerald lakes way above sea level. I actually did most of it on my own as everyone else climbed the colossal mountain above (mount doom in Lord of the Rings) and my knees were to bad to do it! It was also very hot that day and my legs didn't that me for the lack of sun cream later. However, even though we were so tired after we did all manage to drag ourselves down to the hostel bar for one of the best nights out!

Kia ora!
